The Surprising Reason I Went Back to a Gluten-Free Diet

About 2 years ago, I started hearing some new and interesting diet-related information that I was somewhat shocked by.

I heard Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan podcast talking about some of the detriments of eating wheat and I couldn’t believe a lot of the things I was hearing.

Previously, I had only heard of gluten-free diets as being a popular fad diet, or for people who truly had to eat that way in the case of Celiac patients. Now, I had my mind opened up to a new world of eating strategy.

He mentioned that many people actually suffer from gluten sensitivity which they are not even aware of and it’s causing all kinds of noticeable symptoms. It inspired me to stop eating wheat myself to see if anything changed for me.

Honestly, I would say that nothing too noticeable changed for me symptom-wise. But I did definitely feel better on this diet, in terms of how I went about my daily life. I would say I felt more energized, had less crashes, had more discipline, and felt cleaner after I ate meals.

Then, the holidays came around (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s), and I allowed myself to come off the diet to see what happened again. Like I said, nothing too significant other than how I felt and my discipline dropping way off.

What I eventually came to realize, however, was something very important: almost anything that has wheat in it will also contain multiple other ingredients that I do not want to be eating. This could be different forms of soy, industrial seed oils, too much sugar, etc.

When I was allowing myself to eat wheat again, I was simultaneously saying yes to a bunch of other ingredients as well that I would normally say no to. All of these other less-than-ideal ingredients were also dragging me down.

Now, I have set the rule for myself again: no more wheat!

Lo and behold, my diet is spectacular again and it barely even feels like I’m trying. By avoiding wheat, I’m able to pretty easily say no to lots of other things as well because I’ve made it a rule for myself.

This is ultimately why I do the diet. I certainly don’t have to stop eating wheat, but it works very well for me because it actually patches up the rest of my diet for me.

Now, I eat a nutrient-dense diet consisting mainly of meat, eggs, some seafood, dairy, some gluten-free breads or pizzas, and low-sugar treats like chocolate bars or peanut butter cups to keep me going.
